The British Association of Removers (BAR) is dedicated to promoting professional excellence in the Removals Industry. They are the recognised voice of the professional moving industry. BAR are at the forefront of developing and maintaining professional standards and services for the benefit of its members and their customers.

Background

With BAR’s centennial approaching, the client wanted to mark the occasion by having a memento item created to document the history of the Association to be presented to all 450+ UK members to celebrate ‘100 years of professional moving’.

It was decided that a printed ‘History of BAR’ book would be produced. The book was required to be completed in less than four months to coincide with the annual conference.

What we did

With 100 years of history to cover – more for some members – we had to ensure that as many companies as possible were represented and, that it was presented in a meaningful chronological manner and in two formats.

The History Book
The core product – the book – would be split into time slots that took in both UK and worldwide key events.

The studio started on the design and template structure whilst the account team began the research, at which point we began to fully comprehend the enormity of the task at hand.

Emails to members brought in over 400 images and several article pieces, whilst two members brought storage boxes to BAR HQ which between them contained over 2,000 pictures and articles.

We reviewed the client’s print archive of magazines and yearbooks, scanning and photographing as we went and undertook exhaustive desk research and phone interviews to fact check and get additional background and collateral. Then we were shown the BAR photo archive… fourteen full boxes of prints and photographs – a new complete history of the Association; many of the pictures uncaptioned! Though we didn’t count we estimated there to be in excess of 30,000 photos, all of which were assessed and categorised as to their potential usage.

Over the course of an Easter weekend we scanned and photographed more than 600 pictures. After copywriting and image selection, the book was artworked, proofed, amended through to completion and printed – a 68pp book with over 150 pictures – a full history of the Association.

The Timeline
In addition to the book, BAR also wanted something that would make an interesting conversation piece at their HQ in Watford. Because of their in-house training BAR are fortunate to have a sizeable boardroom/training room, the length of which offered an installation opportunity.

Using collateral from the book and some of the unused content a ‘Timeline’ was devised, designed, produced and installed. It consisted of ten 620×820 acrylic panels and various vinyls, and measured 25 feet long!

Results and Benefits

Both projects were delivered on time and on budget, and the client loved them which at the very least meant we fulfilled the brief. In addition the members have been very complimentary – some asking when the next edition is coming out! The Timeline installation has received great responses from staff and visitors; and people are often drawn to it during coffee breaks during meetings, as it acts as a discussion point.

The Client’s View

The book:
“Steve, please pass on my sincere thanks to your team; in the history book we now have a document that shows the importance of the industry through the ages. It also perfectly highlights the trials and tribulations of running a removals company as well as the camaraderie and fun that it can entail. Sterling effort.”

The timeline installation:
“It looks amazing! Even better than the designs!”
